Front Yard Landscaping
Front yard landscaping is quite different from backyard landscaping. The front yard is really a show piece. It is all about complimenting the house and making a great first impression on those who see it. Planning out your front yard landscaping will ensure that you choose the right look and get the right design that suits your landscaping needs.
Main Points of Design
There are a few different main points that you have to keep in mind with your front yard landscaping design. You want to ensure that your landscaping compliments your home and you also need to focus on accessibility. Front yard landscaping often is shaped around highlighting the features of the home and making welcoming walkways that go to the home.
The whole main idea of landscaping in the front yard is to make your home look inviting. You want people to automatically feel good when they pull up to your home. This does not mean that you have to do anything fancy or expensive. Even simple, inexpensive designs work great in the front yard.
Getting Started
Before you ever pick up a shovel or lug a bag of mulch, you need to step back and just access what you are working with. You need to first take notice of your home. See what features you would like to play up. Also consider the walkways and how you might spruce them up.
You should look at the amount of sunlight each area of the yard gets. Also check out existing plants, bushes and trees. You may be able to use some existing things, but others may need to go and that should be done before you get started on your landscaping.
You want to get a general idea of what you would like to see. Most people can easily come up with a general idea to get started. Think about what you like and what would look good. Consider other front yard landscaping that you have seen that you liked.
Making Final Choices
There are a lot of things that you can do with your front yard. In the process of designing your plans, you will need to make a lot of considerations. You will have to think about color, plant type and other landscaping items that you will use.
When choosing colors, you should stick to a general theme that works with your home’s colors. You do not want to bring in too many colors. Generally, a simple color scheme works best. Consider matching your home’s colors or working with complimentary colors.
There are many things you must consider when you buy the plants. You will need to think about the amount of sun that the plant needs, how large the plant grows and the general characteristics of the plant. Some plants may spread rapidly. You also need to think about the soil an water needs.
Finally, you will want to think about using other landscaping items, like rocks, fences or lights. If you want to have other things then you need to figure out how you will work them into the overall design.
Landscaping your front yard can be fun. You can really improve the look of your home and add some character to it. Just remember that you must maintain your landscaping, so avoid the temptation to over do it unless you wan to spend every weekend stuck in the front yard, picking weeds and trimming plants.

I hear a lot of references in Arizona to "Tuscan style" landscaping and like the idea. By this I mean clusters of colorful cacti, bushes and trees with a small fountain and rock benches, as opposed to plants being sparsely placed like you so often see with desert homes.
