The system gets its name from the wheeled cart on which a hose reel is mounted. The irrigation hose is wound around the reel and the gun cart is moved where needed. The large sprinkler attachment is popularly called a "big gun" – so the term "traveling gun" is an apt description.

The traveler moves in a straight line through the area, pulled by a cable on the unit. As the reel turns, it winds up the cable, pulling the traveler along and irrigating from about 80 to 100 acres per unit.
